Marcos Valle
Marcos Valle is, together with his brother Paulo Sergio, one of the great composers of Bossa Nova. He has also become a recognized name around the world with classics like “Summer Samba” and modern reworkings of his songs.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Marcos Valle studied classical piano and music theory at a young age and later learned to play the acoustic guitar. He would later go on to appear at nightclubs and bars that played jazz and jam sessions. In 1961, he formed a group with Edu Lobo and Dori Caymmi. With his brother Paulo Sergio Valle he wrote many hits and in 1964 he released the album "Samba Demais".
The next year he left for the States, where Walter Wanderley recorded "Samba de Verão", with great success. "Preciso Aprender a Ser Só" and "Terra de Ninguém" "Samba de Maria", "O Amor É Chama", "Viola Enluarada" (a duo with Milton Nascimento), "Dia de Vitória", "Gente", "Seu Encanto" and "Ao Amigo Tom" are highlights of this period.
In the 70’s his sound became closer to pop and soul. He started to compose for soap-opera soundtracks and a new batch of hits appeared: "Quarentão Simpático", "Com Mais de Trinta", "Mustang Cor de Sangue", "Os Grilos", "Freio Aerodinâmico", "Que Bandeira", "Black Is Beautiful", "O Cafona", "Não Tem Nada Não".
In the States he worked with Airto Moreira. In the 80’s he invested more in pop and had a few hist like "Bicicleta". Marcos Valle is considered a composer of the second wave of bossa nova artists.
His rhythmic and swingful style, supported by innovative grooves, adapted well to the european dance scene, where his songs were reinvented in the 90’s through remixes influenced by drum’n’bass: they were called drum’n’bossa. His albums were re-released and new ones were recorded specially through Far Out Records.
Therefore, Marcos hás become and international composer, loved in Europe, USA and Japan. In 2004, singer Emma Bunton, ex-Spice Girls, recorded one of his songs on her album “Free Me”. “Crickets Sing for Anamaria”, an english adaptation of “Os Grilos”, was considered one of the album’s highlights.
In 2005, he released “Jet-Samba” a mostly instrumental album featuring songs like "Selva de Pedra", "Campina Grande" and "Esperando o Messias". It was a great critical success earning an award of the São Paulo Art Critics Association.
In 2008 he released the live CD/DVD “Conecta”, where he shares the stage with artists like Marcelo Camelo, Kassin+2 and Fino Coletivo.
