Karnivool
Karnivool is a band that defies conventions, their hands on approach with all facets of their career creates the need for them to work to their own schedule. Epic in scope and broad in nature, Hidden from the dirty fingers of the music machine Australia’s Karnivool have built an empire in the dark. Banding together in Perth Western Australia, the most isolated capital city in the world, has sheltered the five-strong collective in a way that has given them the freedom to become a supremely powerful unit writing compelling and magnetic music. Now, after seven years of quiet evolution, all logistical concerns with distance and exposure to their exponentially increasing fan-base have faded; the flow has become a flood and the Karnivool experience has intoxicated an entire nation.
More doctrine than rock band, more movement than metal, Karnivool’s arresting command of contemporary heavy music has thrust them to the fore of their native scene and threatens to do the same on an international scale. Built upon a ravenous exploration of melodic composition the Karnivool sound is anchored upon a sensory weight that can take the listener inside the intent, offering inclusion in an experience bigger than anything that can be perceived externally. It’s this sense of connection with fragile moments that has garnered Karnivool a manic fan base of loyal followers, intent on assuring the band’s swift ascent to the world stage.
Since the release of their critically acclaimed debut Themata in 2005, Karnivool have grown into their newfound role as Australia’s most avant-garde heavy rock outfit and the calling cards of influence have been left behind. Their 2009 follow up to Themata; Sound Awake is a realisation of time and passion and once again demonstrates the band’s care and thought towards the recording process. It’s been worth the wait, Set Fire To The Hive the first taste of what’s to come will be unveiled shortly and is a sonic call to arms.
Sound Awake follows their ground breaking highly acclaimed debut album Themata and although it’s taken an incredible four years to pull it together, the album is well worth the wait. Recorded in Perth and Melbourne since last October Sound Awake will be released in early June. Tracked in a couple of studios and locations including Kingdom and Blackbird, the album was mixed at Sing Sing (Melbourne) and Blackbird (Perth) by Forrester Savell who was responsible for the band’s debut album and has also recently worked with The Butterfly Effect and Dallas Frasca. The album has just been mastered by Tom Coyne (DJ Shadow and The Roots) at Sterling Sounds in New York City.
Karnivool’s debut was a sleeper hit in Australia spending over 160 weeks in the AIR Charts; selling 30,000 copies domestically it built a huge fan base of avid devotees of the band along the way. It was released in the USA, UK, Mexico, Canada and Japan. The album’s title track received airplay all over the world and also made in roads into Active Rock Charts in the US where the band toured for several months.
Expect soaring melodies, spiny riffs, sharp technique, sonic textures exotic scale choice and time signatures galore from Karnivool when they release their new album and return to stages this winter.
