EMI Film & TV Administration Service

Account Management

By owning the music publishing rights in music commissioned for their productions, a production company or broadcaster can build a long term asset and participate in royalties from broadcast and performance of music in their productions around the world and from further exploitation.

Our experienced and dedicated Media team focus on the specialist management of music publishing rights on behalf of broadcasters and film and television producers.

Advances on rights can be negotiated for investment in production and music budgets.  We can provide advice on negotiating and contracting with composers, or provide a full composer contracting service.  Furthermore, we can work as a wider music partner, providing full music supervision and access to our commercial catalogue (www.emimusicpub.com) and libraries KPM (www.playkpm.com) and Music House (www.playmusichouse.com).

EMI Music Publishing has won the prestigious Music Week Publisher of the Year award for the last 13 consecutive years.

We offer a market leading administration service (see below), and actively work to maximise royalty potential beyond use within the original production.

Our ‘Sound of the Screen’ compilations have led to valuable global re-use on trailers, advertising and across TV.  We have a number of soundtrack partners (physical and digital labels / distributors), and can optimize your music rights by licensing for media such as CD ROMs, computer games and plush toys.

We have recently launched a consumer facing brand “Lyric” to merchandise our music and lyrics across a number of retails ranges.  We are constantly seeking new and emerging market opportunities and have dedicated creative and licensing staff across the world pro-actively working our catalogues and responding to music briefs.

In addition, we successfully re-exploit many Film & TV copyrights as Production Library music through the FTV Media strand of KPM.  FTV Media is distributed and marketed through KPM (the World’s No.1 music library) and KPM’s worldwide agent network.

Our international Film & TV client base ranges from start up production companies to global household brands and includes 20th Century Fox, ITV, Intermedia Films (Terminator 3, Magicians, The Quiet American), Hit Entertainment (Bob the Builder, Thomas the Tank Engine, Barney & Friends), Tinopolis (A Very Social Secretary, Dispatches, Beating Cancer), MGA Entertainment (Bratz), Firefly.

Administration (Copyright / Tracking / Royalties)

Our Media department are supported by our Administration team with invaluable experience and specialist knowledge of the intricacies of handling audiovisual copyrights

EMI have an unparalleled worldwide network of affiliate offices providing a global publishing service and at source accounting.  There are currently 58 EMI Music Publishing offices worldwide and we are always endeavouring to expand our world market.  We were the first publisher to establish a sub-publishing network covering many ‘new territories’ that have only in recent years recognised copyright law, for example; China, Russia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Latvia, Slovenia, Ukraine.  EMI is continuing to make headway into further new territories such as India which, as yet, remains a huge untapped music publishing market.

We are at the forefront of developing and establishing administration and society practices.  We were the first major UK publisher to adopt the Common Works Registration procedure and make direct electronic registrations from the UK to 18 European collection societies.  Through playing a central role in publisher groups (e.g. Chair of IMPA/CISAC G10 AV Working Group), society committees, and having board representation at almost all of the major collection societies, we are in a position to influence royalty tariff negotiations, and the evolution of society practices in respect of all film and television matters, thus ensuring client interests are looked after at the highest level.

New advanced Copyright (SAM) and Royalty (RITA) systems are being introduced first half 2008 enabling us to be provide an unrivalled level of reporting.  Statements can be tailored to client requirements.  Withholding tax is not deducted from international royalties; monies received from our affiliates are based on gross figures.  We can provide accounting on behalf of clients to composers and 3rd parties.

EMI was the first publisher to establish Royalty Tracking operations and have remained at the forefront of developing procedures and strategies to ensure thorough royalty collection, setting industry bench marks other publishers strive to match.

In 2001/2002 we undertook a study into royalties for broadcasts of programmes outside their originating territory and the difficulties faced in pursuing global royalty claims.  As a result of this research, we realised the need to have confirmed broadcast data to analyse income and support claims and developed a tracking system that has been fully operational for 6 years.

We have full and confirmed broadcast data for over 100 International broadcasters dating back to 1st January 2000.  The system matches foreign and original language episode titles to a high standard. Subject to society rules, we can take on and investigate retrospective royalty claims.

Accessible by all EMI affiliates worldwide, the EMI Cue Sheet Database has been developed to enable distribution of and access to cue sheets.  Monthly reports are distributed to EMI offices notifying of cue sheets added to the database and scheduled broadcasts by territory.  Direct access to the site has been provided to various societies (e.g. PRS, STIM, ARTISJUS) and music reporting bodies including Soundmouse.

In addition to administration of music publishing rights, we are able to utilise our infrastructure to collect additional revenue streams due to production companies such as AGICOA (cable re-transmission), PPL and blank tape levies.
