Guy Chambers' Isis Project

Jun 14, 2005

The Isis Project, released on June 13th, is an eponymously titled French language album from acclaimed songwriter and producer Guy Chambers, featuring the vocals of Sophie Hunter.

Released via Guy Chambers' own record label Sleeper Music, The Isis Project is a song cycle, an exploration of an imaginary woman's life from the innocence of childhood, the temptations of adolescence, young love and the complexities of middle age to the confusion and decline of old age.

The Isis Project is a deeply personal project for Chambers (who is perhaps best known for his songwriting and production work with the likes of Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue amongst others) and is songwriting collaboration with French artist and songwriter Keren Ann Zeidel who wrote the lyrics.

"First and foremost this album is an 18th birthday present for my four year old daughter Isis and is a snapshot of where I was musically in the very early years of her life," says Chambers.

The Isis Project started with a simple backing track, which was written in January 1999. it was the first piece of music Chambers wrote after getting engaged to his wife Emma. The second movement, Song for Isis was written when their first child was born. Some two years later the project had begun to gather dust when Keren Ann Zeidel was suggested as a lyricist by Chambers' French music publisher Fabrice Nataf and sent over a version of one of the songs with French lyrics - 'Chère Isis' - that were so perfect it inspired Chambers to invite her to London for an intensive writing session.

"She is without doubt one of the coolest collaborators I have had the pleasure of working with. Various visits ensued and slowly but surely we completed the writing for the album with the track 'La Muscade' a little over a year later," says Chambers.

Drawing on such contemporary electronica influences as Goldfrapp and Air whilst maintaining a classic and timeless 'ambience' The Isis Project marked a distinct musical turning point for Chambers who felt liberated by the creative freedom that the songs afforded him.
