Alex Heffes has emerged as a leading young talent composing for film and television, drawing upon his classical training and abilities as a jazz pianist and orchestral arranger.
Alex gained a 1st class degree in music from Oxford University. Upon graduating he worked extensively on commercials while also maintaining a busy schedule writing and arranging for projects ranging from Steel band to experimental jazz.
For a number of years Alex gained experience assisting on a variety of UK and US movies including, Cousin Bette (Fox Searchlight Films), A Midsummer Night's Dream (Fox Searchlight Films), Photographing Fairies (Polygram), This Year's Love (Kismet) and Born Romantic.
Alex’s first major film commission was to score the Oscar-winning feature documentary One Day In September (directed by Kevin Macdonald), which was to generate wide critical acclaim for Alex.
His versatility has led to a wide range of projects including feature films such as The Parole Officer (DNA Films), Late Night Shopping (Film Four), Trauma (starring Colin Firth), Dear Frankie (Pathé Pictures), Imagine Me & You (Fragile Films), as well as television drama and documentary series, and advertising campaigns (including the Virgin One Account campaign launched January 2005, London Fullers Pride, Peugeot, Norwich Union, P&O, The Halifax, The Post Office).
Alex's successful partnership with Director Kevin Macdonald has continued with Alex scoring Touching The Void, the drama documentary based on Joe Simpson's international best-selling book and most recently the Oscar winning Last King of Scotland (2006). Touching the Void won the Evening Standard 'Best Film of the Year' award and the BAFTA Alexander Korda Award for ‘Outstanding British Film of the Year’. Last King of Scotland opened the 2006 London Film Festival and went on to win an Oscar & BAFTA for Forest Whitaker (Best Actor) and BAFTA award for Best Film.
