| Veteran songwriter/trumpeter/bandleader and record producer Dave Bartholomew is one of the architects of the legendary rhythm & blues music out of New Orleans. His music has had a huge influence on artists, particular those overseas, who've successfully recorded his songs over the years. For example, UK singer Bitty McLean revived IT KEEPS RAININ' in 1993 on a a superb reggae arrangement which sampled Dave's brass figures from the Fats Domino original; the record went to #2 there!
Then there's Dave's classic social commentary called THE MONKEY which he wrote and recorded himself on Imperial back in 1957. Over the years, various artists have discovered and revived this narrative song including Texas blues-rock outfit The Fabulous Thunderbirds (on Chrysalis in 1982), French band Mano Negra (on Virgin in 1994), Jamaica's Mutabaruka on Heartbeat in 2002 and Louisiana's very own Dr. John on his Blue Note album "N'Awlinz: Dis Dat Or D'Udda" last year. (And the song and Dave are referenced by Elvis Costello on the "Monkey To Man" song on his recent "The Delivery Man" album). Who knows...with this great pedigree, it could be the perfect time for a new revival of I HEAR YOU KNOCKING!
Here's a sampling of Dave's EMI songs and the original records which made the charts including key hits that he wrote with and for rock 'n' roll legend Antoine 'Fats' Domino:
