| Of all the orchestra leaders during the big band/dance band era of the 1930's & 1940's, Glenn Miller stands out because his unique instrumental sound was so identifiable while the tunes which he and his orchestra popularized are still being revived today by artists ranging from Regina Carter to Brian Setzer.
Glenn himself played trombone but it was a combination of a clarinet and sax section all playing in unison that became instantly recognized the world over as the 'Glenn Miller Sound'.
EMI publishes more than three dozen melodies which were recorded and released by Miller during the band's heyday including their legendary theme tune, MOONLIGHT SERENADE as well as the timeless million-selling CHATTANOOGA CHOO CHOO. The great lyric writer Carl Sigman, who died in 2000, co-authored PENNSYLVANIA 6-5000, so-called because it was the telephone number of New York's Hotel Pennsylvania where big bands of the day regularly appeared.
All the following recordings are by Glenn Miller & His Orchestra; vocalists are listed where lyrics were featured. *This list contains original Bluebird & Victor recordings made during Miller's lifetime and now owned by BMG. He tragically disappeared when his plane that left England for a concert in Paris, France, on December 15, 1944, never arrived at its destination. His Orchestra continued recording, but their output after 1944 is not included here.
