New Year's Honors For George Shearing and Rod Stewart

In the Queen of England’s New Year’s Honors List, veteran jazz pianist GEORGE SHEARING became Sir George Shearing and rocker ROD STEWART was awarded the prestigious CBE (Commander Of The British Empire).

The EMI-published jazz classic LULLABY OF BIRDLAND was written by George Shearing and copyrighted in 1952; he first recorded it for MGM Records and later re-cut the tune while he was under contract to Capitol. Shearing, who is blind, was born in London in 1919.

Rod Stewart was born in London in 1945 and performed initially with such groups as Long John Baldry & The Hoochie Coochie Men and also Steampacket. His first solo singles were on the UK Decca and EMI’s Columbia labels. EMI MP publishes the majority of Rod’s cachet of hit songs including MAGGIE MAY, TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT, YOUNG TURKS and DA YA THINK I’M SEXY.
