CHEATING SONGS

Below is a list of some EMI-published classic cheating songs.  Leading the pack is Dan Penn & Chips Moman's milestone ballad, THE DARK END OF THE STREET, which was gloriously sung by Mississippi-born R&B singer James Carr; his mellifluous voice spelling out the guilt-ridden, explanatory lyric:

"Hiding in shadows where we don't belong/
Living in darkness to hide our wrong"

In amongst Gerry Goffin & Carole King's hit-laden catalog is an often-revived tale of infidelity namely, OH NO, NOT MY BABY, which was recorded first by Maxine Brown and later by Rod Stewart.  The opening verse perfectly sets the scene:

"When my friends told me you had someone new,
I didn't believe a single word was true.
I told them all I had faith in you"
